Key Components
The Brush (Maobi): Typically made from natural animal hair (such as goat, wolf, rabbit, or badger), these bristles are shaped to hold a large amount of fluid. The center (core) of the brush is thicker to hold liquid, while the surrounding hairs taper to a fine, sharp point.
The Ink: Traditional Chinese calligraphy ink is often made from soot or pine resin mixed with water, which is then ground on an inkstone. Pre-mixed bottled inks are also widely used. They are highly pigmented, permanent, and do not bleed when dry.
Common Uses
Chinese Calligraphy: Used to form the stylized characters of the Chinese language.
Brush Painting (Sumi-e): Ideal for creating gradients, shading, and the flowing lines characteristic of traditional East Asian art.
Modern Lettering: Utilized by artists and designers for highly expressive typography and illustration
